Clayboard is a prepared medium of masonite board coated with clay and India ink. The artist uses
several different tools to remove the pigment from the surface, creating the light aspects of the figure and leaving the darkest
areas untouched. Tools can include anything from specialized scratching nibs to straight pins and steel wool, depending on
the desired effect or texture. This unforgiving medium is capable of capturing stark, pure images in black and white, with
interpretations from realistic to abstract. A minimalist, Rachael favors the sharp contrast of this medium and the ability
to render complex images with simple shapes.
